What Are You Feeding On?

What Are You Feeding On?

According to Ayurvedic philosophy, we are all created of spirit and light rather than mere flesh hand bones.  The physical body is a temple that houses the finer domains of the mind and soul. As recognized by ancient cultures and religions around the globe, we are actually spiritual beings having a human experience, rather than the other way around.  We are crafted from the same energy that weaves together all of life.

To truly understand how to “feed” ourselves, we must, therefore, extend beyond the physical body alone.  According to Ayurveda, anything that affects our consciousness is considered food. Yoga, breathing exercises, and meditation are thus highly charged types of food, because they directly nourish our deeper consciousness.

The realm of the senses also provides direct nourishment to the finer domains of the mind and soul.  For example, a soothing sonata and a blaring car alarm are merely different types of food on the level of the mind and senses.  The subtle effects of these sensory impressions feed the mind, much like the 5 elements feed the physical body. The mind, in turn, nourishes both the physical body and ultimately, the spirit or soul.

Ayurveda offers many recommendations for properly feeding our senses.  The recipes and cooking are designed to provide nourishment on all levels of the senses.

HELPFUL HINTS FOR OPTIMAL DIGESTION

  • Practice the Art of Eating Mindfully

  • Say a prayer of Thanksgiving to God for the food and the pleasure it will bring to the senses

  • Practice Gratitude to Mother Earth for providing the food and the nourishment that will come from the food.

  • Serve your food on a special bowl or plate.

  • Practice eating in silence.  No words. No music or noise in the background.  Total silence.

  • Look at our food.  Notice the colors. Smell the aroma.  Slowly taste each bite and savor. Chew food 30 times before swallowing.

  • Notice how the body feels during each bite - be the ‘observer’ of the sensations of the body.

  • When thoughts wander and you find yourself eating ‘unconsciously’ then bring your thoughts back to the sight, smell and taste of the food.

  • Drink room temperature beverages during meal - when preparing meal may consider drinking CCF tea (digestive tea of cumin, coriander and fennel) or warm water with lemon and fresh ginger.  This helps stoke the agni fire (digestive fire) and prepare the stomach for optimal digestion.

  • Finish your meal at first burp.

  • Give thanks at the end of the meal and practice mindful cleaning up with gratitude.
